Siri Hustvedt's first novel, The Blindfold (1993), reveals how its heroine, Iris Vegan, suffers from "male gaze" and various kinds of violence towards women in the modern world. This paper mainly focuses on "the uncanny" and transvestism in order to consider how Iris finds herself trapped as a young woman. Uncanny events blur her sense between herself and others, and her cross-dressing brings her another self as a man. Hustvedt depicts the city of New York as the place where people go through anonymity and disguises among strangers. Iris's experiences in the city draw out her desire for masculinity and violence and influence her idea of femininity and gender. This novel shows how women are pushed into becoming victims in the city full of socially constructed boundaries between male and female.
