Kumo no ito (July, 1918; translated as A Spider's Web) by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, the author's maiden short story for juveniles, was published in the initial issue of a juvenile literature journal Akai Tori edited by Miekichi Suzuki. It had been adopted in both pre- and postwar school textbooks and read by many people. But since the early days of its publication, the work was exposed to both criticisms and praise. This paper picks up the epoch-making criticism 'Is Kumo no ito a Masterpiece?' (April, 1957) by Taruhi Furuta in which he criticized the story as a second-rate reading, saying that it is based on a mere thought of rewarding the good and punishing the wicked imbued with ready-made morals. With other successive polemics, the researcher rearranges their discussions and analyzes them to see what Furuta's point was and clarifies how it influenced the story's adoption as a teaching material. The researcher also shows comments on Kumo no ito from the field of modern literature studies and explores the possibilities of this story, which today has been eliminated from Japanese language readers.
