Enzyme activities of the tissues containing essential oils were observed with a light microscope on Umbelliferae and Labiatae herbs using histochemical methods. The sections were prepared with a Hooker microtome. The enzymes tested were dehydrogenases, acid phosphatase and non-specific esterase. In Umbelliferae, essential oils were located in secretory canals. The epithelial cells around them showed the activities of all the enzymes tested. In labiatae, the epidermal glands which secreted essential oils did not show any noticeable reactions in the incubation times of this study. These results were presumably caused by disturbance of penetration of the histochemical reagents by cuticules of the epidermal glands.
