Higher education is now entering global competition and in order for Japanese universities to survive it is indispensable for them to develop educational programs in an international language, i.e., English. A few universities including Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University have already succeeded in attracting international students by conducting courses in English, while many universities seem not to be ready for the global age. This inquiry is based on e-mail dialogue and discussions about what Japanese universities should do in particular reference to the development of educational programs in English.
