This paper discusses a chapter entitled "The Woman" in Jespersen (1922), arguing that contemporary criticisms of Jespersen as anti-feminist are unfounded. Feminist linguists often cite "The Woman" as a typical work that is biased against women. In so doing, they censure Jespersen for his conclusion that women speak more softly, use more limited vocabulary, and more frequently leave their sentences unfinished than men. In the first section of the paper, I introduce critics of Jespersen such as Cameron (1985), Coates (2004) and Spender (1985). The next section then summarizes the main points in "The Woman" and demonstrates that Jespersen's analysis of women's language is purely descriptive from a linguist standpoint and is far from being anti-feminist. While it is true that Jespersen claims that women are generally more conservative than men in English, he also notes that in certain languages, such as Japanese, women are less conservative. In the third section, I deal with Lakoff's Language and Woman's Place (1975), often considered a groundbreaking book in gender studies, and show that Lakoff's analysis of women's language use has much in common with Jespersen (1922)'s. The paper concludes that despite the criticisms leveled by feminist linguists against Jespersen, "The Woman" represents a pioneering work in the history of gender studies for having successfully drawn attention to the unique characteristics of women's language now being systematically investigated.
