The eastern coastal region of the Ariake Sea is known as the Miike coal-filed in general. The paleogene formation of this filed is broadly divided as a matter of convenience into three districts from north to south on the basis of sedimentation. In each district, the coal-bearing formation develops in the lower part of the Paleogene and the marine formation ouccurs in the upper part. The coal-bearing formations of these three districts was correlated with one another. The writer, from the studies on the foraminiferal and molluscan fossils, considers that the coal-bearing formation of the northern district was deposited as the marginal facies of the southern marine formation, and these two formations interfinger with each other in the northern and middle districts.
