The geotectonic development of Hokkaido is one of the interesting problems in Hokkaido, since the main part of this Island has long been considered as the connecting place of the Nippon and the Chishima arcs. The students of the Hidaka metamorphic region have published their assumptions on the geotectonic development of Hokkaido as the Hidaka Orogenic Movements or Alpine Orogeny in Hokkaido, chiefly from the view point of metamorphic petrography (Funahashi and S. Hashimoto, 1951 ; Minato, Funahashi and Yagi, 1956 ; Funahashi, 1957). On the other hand, the writer, as a Mesozoic stratigrapher, attempted to elucidate his idea on the same problem in 1958, based on the data known until 1955 and mostly recorded within the sedimentary formations, however, several important questions still remained. For solving these questions, he spent the recent few years in collecting more data in field works with favourable results. This summer, the writer, with several cooperators, had an opportunity to examine the stratigraphic subdivision of the Kumaneshiri group, the so-called Paleozoic deposits of the Kabato Massif, established by T. Kakimi and T. Uemura (1958). According to this reconnaissance work, the writer recognized that there may be established a standard stratigraphic column. As a preliminary correlation by the writer, an orogenic disturbance occurred prior to the deposition of the Sorachi Group as would be expected due to the difference of geologic structures and tectotopes, while its very base is not yet known.
