Experiments were made on a model centrifugal supercharger in order to study the flow patterns within the impeller. The two sides of the supercharger casing were of glass and instantaneous sketches of the flow patterns were made by means of the smoke from burning joss-sticks. The light source of this experimental installation was a spark that was caused to be generated on the secondary circuit of a transformer, to the primary circuit of which a direct current of 200 volts was switched on at this instant by means of an oil switch. The impellers used in these experiments were straight radial blades of 10, 8, and 6 blades, besides curved blade impellers of 30°forward thrown, 60°forward radial exit, 60°backward and 30°backward thrown blades. The experiments were made both with and without diffuser guide vanes, the delivery side of this superchargers being either fully open or closed. The photographic results of this experiments correspond to the case of relatively small mass flow. The results are shown in Figs.7-86. The various impellers showed a common tendency in that the smoke flowed directly on the pressure side of the blade until when a certain distance was reached, the smoke from this point no longer flowed on the pressure side of the blades, doing so near the negative pressure side of the blade or the regions of theoretically large relative velocities. These phenomena were naturally recorded by means of small deliveries and with forward thrown or straight radial blades. This tendency was hardly seen in the case of backward thrown blades. Lastly, the theoretical velocity distributions within the experimental impellers were calculated, using the measured mass flow, pressures, and temperatures, in order to ascertain whether or not the negative velocity regions or the eddy regions thus calculated agreed well with the non-smoke regions mentioned above of these expeirmental results.
