Numerical calculation of power variation with altitude in both a naturally aspirated engine and in a gear driven supercharged engine were made as recently reported. This paper deals with the theoretical calculation of fuel consumption as the result of variation in the power of the engine at altitude. Fuel consumption varies considerably with the compression ratio of engine and the air fuel ratio. With constant compression ratio and air fuel ratio, however, the fuel consumption varies also with altitude in a naturally aspirated engine, while in a gear driven supercharged engine it varies not only with altitude, but also with boost pressure and temperature. The present paper deals with these numerical relations reserving the numerical calculation covering general altitude performance of aero engine for a succeeding report.
