The variation of intensity of the forced vibration in various pipes caused by external source of given frequencies was measured as function of its length. The shapes of pipes used in the experiments are of four varieties: - (1) a straight pipe with a uniform circular section, (2) a bent pipe with a uniform circular section, (3) a straight pipe with a neck, (4) a pipe connected with a conical horn at its neck. In order to change the length of the pipe, a movable piston is made to slide along the axis of the pipe. Near the mouth of the pipe, the Rayleigh disc is suspended by a quartz fibre, and the intensity of the forced vibration in the pipe is measured. As the source of sound, organ pipes blown under a constant pressure are used. In all of the above four cases, the experiments were carried with four different pitches of sound, c^1, c^2, c^3 and c^4. The distance between the source and the mouth of the pipe is 200cm. The experiments were performed in the sound-proof chamber in the Institute.
