Three bridges were completed in the Seto Inland Sea almost at the same time in the 1990's. These will pave the way for a new perspective in regional development and academic research after 2000. The routes via three bridges have different regional characteristics. The Kobe-Naruto route has an island in the middle, and the Kojima-Sakaide route through the means of a bridge performs a pivotal role between Okayama City and Takamatsu City. The Onomichi-Imabari route also raises a number of interesting issues toward the future, such as: - the "peninsularization" of remote islands by connecting them with the six major islands - relations between islands and the regional urban centers of Onomichi and Imabari - relations between the island city of Innoshima and remote islands The Sanyo side, reflecting the corridor-like chracter of the Seto Inland area (from Tokyo to Kita Kyushu), expands in a linear way. However, the Northern Shikoku side is characterized by its scattered developments. What role will bridges play in the future? On the Onomichi-Imabari route, with its numerous islands, the aging population becomes an important issue, but this should be addressed in consideration of the high proportion of primary industries on those islands. The first stage after the completion of the bridges will center around the betterment of the regional economy. How will the second and third stages be? Guidelines concerning the future of the area, encompassing current issues, should be formulated from the standpoint of geography.
