Much has been said about Iago. Hazlitt says that "Iago is the amateur of tragedy in real life". Bradley defines him as a man who is more self-commanding than "Socrates or the ideal sage of the Stoics". W. Knight thinks him to be "cynicism incarnate", "a kind of Mephistopheles". According to Granville-Barker, "he is a passionless creature". I. Ribner defines him as "the personification of jealousy" All these critics have attemped to represent Iago to be inhuman or a personification nof evil, Hazlitt's Iago contrves to ruin his friends, to sxercise his genius and to kill men in the dark to prevent ennui. But Iago is neither such a symbol of evil or a beast without passion. He is a living person "eaten up with passion". We must take it into account that Iago is physiologically jealous. Iago's evil-doing is never the "motiveless malignity" which Corelidge ascribes to him. It is true that he has no external motives for his wicked deeds, but, "jealous souls are not jealous for the cause / But jealous for they are jealous;" as Emilia says. It is this very jealousy that urges him to do his evil. For jealousy awakens the potential evil of everyone. He is "one of us", in Conrad's phrase. I have obsesved Iago from this point of view.
