In June, 1985, I researched the dietary habits of 101 Miyazaki City nursery school children, 3 to 6 years old, in order to understand existing dietary conditions of that age group. I found the following facts regarding intake of nutritive substances and food groups. 1. There was a deficiency in the intake of iron and vitamin B_1 was small. 2. Much of the calcium and vitamin A was taken from lunch and snacks at nursery school. 3. The ratio of fat energy to nutritive substance was within normal limits, but the ratio of sugar energy was low. The ratio of protein energy was high. The ratio of animal protein was also above standard, which suggests that children's food tended to be westernized. 4. The nursery school intake of fish, meat, and eggs was large, and they take even more of such food groups at home. Their average intake of potatoes (including sweet potatoes and taros), milk, and green and yellow vegetables was small. 5. Children took more green and yellow vegetables at nursery school than at home. Further research into the cause of this phenomenon and ways to increase the in-take of these vegetables at home is desirable. 6. There was a great variety of foodstuffs taken each day, but only a limited variety taken at home.
