The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the physical education program upon the physical fitness of students in Miyazaki Women's Junior College. The subjects were the female students in the primary education department, the nursery education department, and in the Japanese literature department who entered in 1984. There were 217 subjects in all. Their physical fitness was tested in April 1984, 1985, and in March 1986, and compared with data from students in 1975 and 1976, and with data relating to all junior college students in Japan in 1983, published in the report from the Ministry of Education. The subjects were found to have increased by 1.6 to 2.0 cm in height and by 0.9 to 2.0 kg in weight compared to those who entered the college in 1975 and 1976. While there was an improvement in vertical jump, side step test, standing trunk flexion, and back strength, there was a decline in grip strength and trunk extension. Almost all measures of the physical fitness and condition of our students were standard according to the report from the Ministry of Education, but our students were below average in the vertical jump and trunk extension. The tests showed there was a decline or no change in the condition of the fittest students examined in April 1985, but an improvement in the condition of the least fit. It means that the weekly physical education classes can be considered to have had a positive effect on the physical fitness of the least fit students and a negative or no effect on the fittest students. In conclusion, to keep the physical fitness .of our students, we have to examine new physical education programs, and to guide the students to take part in more exercises and sports.
