The purpose of this study was to clarify the influences of the mothers diet behavior and belief on desire to be lean and the diet behavior in their children, analyze factors affecting this desire and diet behavior and find the subjects, time, direction, and appropriate measures of physique health education. As factors preceding diet behavior, the growth stage, sex, and the degree of obesity were associated with desire to be lean. Desire to be lean and interest in diet had akeady appeared in 4th year primary school students, which confirmed a decrease in age for this desire. However, there were marked individual differences in desire to be lean and the preceding recognition of the physique in primary/junior high school students. Therefore, early health educational interventions may prevent distortion of the awareness of the physique and the development of prejudiced desire to be lean, allowing the establishment of a healthy lifestyle including appropriate diet and exercise.
