The combustion characteristics of two standard up- and down-draft types of stoves were determined under comparative conditions. It is impossible to burn bituminous coal smokelessly in the simple up-draft stove. The principal cause is the lowering of the temperature of the combustion zone by the new charge, and some device to keep the combustible above its ignition temperature, such as air preheating, of the use of hot catalytic solid surface, may be effective to some extent. For the up-draft type, the regulation of the damper is most important in order to maintain a higher thermal efficiency. Improvement in the fluctuation for the up-draft type and low initial heating rate for the down-draft type, both seem to be very difficult to accomplish; and then investigations on the use of other smokeless and more efficient fuel such as, coke, gas or electricity, more conveniently and economically, are urgent problems to be solved.
