During the Expedition of Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands 1974 (Natural History Research Project of the Japanese Islands), 831 specimenss of marine fishes were collected in sea-waters along the coasts of Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands, southern Kyushu, Japan. They were obtained by a dip net (25×35 cm), a seine (200×300 cm) , a set net, and a drag net. The collection embraces 44 families and 143 species. These species where listed up according to the classification by MATSUBARA (1955). Distribution of tropical and subtropical fishes such as Chelon vaigiensis (Mugilidae), Ernogrammoides fasciatus (Acanthoclinidae), Enchelyurus kraussi (Blenniidae), Gobiodon quinquestrigatus (Gobiidae), Pomacentrus moluccensis (Pomacentridae), Macropharyngodon pardalis (Labridae, Corinae), Pseudocheilinus hexataenia (Labridae, Cheilininae), Cryptotomus spinidens (Scaridae), Platax teira (Platacidae), and Acanthurus maculiceps (Acanthuridae) in Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands suggests that the fish fauna of these islands reflects strongly those of Philippine and Okinawa Islands. On the other hand, the fact that Meiacanthus kamoharai (Blenniidae) and Gobiodon atrangulatus (Gobiidae), both of which have not been reported to distribute south of Okinawa Islands, were collected in this expedition and the fact that the most successful Salariini in tide pools may be Prealticus tanegasimae seem to show more similarity with the fish fauna of Ogasawara Islands than those of Philippine and Okinawa Islands. The species number of tropical and subtropical fishes which live in Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands decreases abruptly in Shikoku and Honshu of Japan. These facts suggest that the shore-fish fauna of Kuroshio Current does not change gradually, but changes abruptly around the sea of Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands in its course from Philippine Islands to the mainland of Japan via Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands. As a whole the fish fauna of Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands seems to show the characteristics of the tropical and subtropical fish fauna of Southeast Asia, although there are many species which distribute only from central to southern Japan are found in it.
