1. Dr. Jun-ichi AOKI collected, among others, 57 species of spiders on the Tsushima Islands as a result of his field study of its fauna conducted in October, 1968. Side by side with AOKI's collection, the writer has recently been given an opportunity of identifying the spiders collected by Mr. M. OHNO (1962) and Mr. A. TADA (1967) on the same islands. Concerning the spider fauna of Tsushima, reports were published in the past by Dr. T. UYEMURA (1943), Mr. T. YAMAGUCHI (1955) and YAGINUMA (1966). As a whole, it has now been confirmed that 105 species of spiders can be found on the Tsushima Islands. 2. The new species, Thanatus nipponicus and Coelotes grandivulva, are described in the present report. 3. The species worthy of notice from the view points of their distribution and classification are as follows : 1) Ummidia tsushimensis (KISHIDA) [nom. nud.] The name was reported without description. Presumably the species belongs to U. fragaria (DOENITZ) commonly found in other places. Future confirmation is, therefore, required as to whether spiders referable to this genus can really be found there or not. 2) Araneus bituberculatus (WALCKENAER) This species has an extensive distribution in the Palaearctic region, but its specimens hitherto collected in Japan have been very few and sporadical. The mixed habitation of such a northern species on the islands, is worthy of note. To identify this Japanese species with A. bituberculatus of Europe is problematical, but the author prefers tentatively to regard the former as a Japanese form (one of the geographical variations) of the European species. 3) Paraplectana tsushimensis YAMAGUCHI The type-locality of this species is Tsushima, but its specimens have later been collected in the two prefectures of Ehime and Miyazaki as well as on the islands of Amami-Ohshima and Okinawa. 4) Leucauge blanda (L. KOCH) This species is not particularly rare, but is significant in indicating the occurrence of the southern element in the islands. 5) Synagelides agoriformis STRAND Specimens of this species have been collected in the southern part of the mainland of Japan, Shikoku and Kyushu as well as on the Island of Yakushima, but it is few in the number of individuals. By habit, this species appears to have some relationship with ants. 4. Viewed from the percentage of the specific composition of a family, the mixed habitation of both northern and southern species and various other specific aspects, it is considered that the spider fauna of the Tsushima Islands belongs to the type of warm region. considered that the spider fauna of the Tsushima Islands belongs to the type of warm region. 5. No endemic species has yet been found on the Tsushima Islands. 6. The spider fauna of the Tsushima Islands is of the Japanese type, and no species common exclusively with Korea has yet been found. Consequently, from the zoogeographical view point, the Korea Straits should be considered more important as the barrier for distribution than the Tsushima Straits. 7. The northernmost border line of distribution of southern species of animals and plants, the Honshu southern coastal line, passes near the Tsushima Islands, and therefore, the fauna of the islands bears close resemblance to that of Tokaido Provinces, Central Kinki Area, coastal districts of the Inland Sea of Seto or North Kyushu lying respectively on the same line.
