Preliminary Study of Ages of Monazites in Sands from the Yangtze River

Ages of the monazites in the sands from the Yangtze River were determined to confirm variation of geological age in the drainage basin of the river. They range from Tertiary to Archean. Peak positions are 0-25,100-300,400-500,700-900 and 1800-2000 Ma. Abundance of the Tertiary monazite shows that the Yangtze River runs cutting through the Himalayan-Tibet region. It is in contrast with the monazite ages in the Jialing River, tributary of the Yangtze River, where there is no young monazite. Jurassic and Silurian sandstones from Chongqing and Wuhan areas have different frequency in monazite age each other. In addition to granitic and gneissose rocks in the drainage basin, the clastic rocks also contribute to the complex age pattern of the Yangtze River.
