The mycological herbarium of the National Science Museum, Tokyo (TNS) had been established by the late Rokuya Imazeki around 1931. In 1946,Imazeki was transferred from the museum to another institute and Yosio Kobayasi filled Imazeki's position. In 1972,our laboratories and the specimens of the Department of Botany were moved from Ueno to the Shinjuku Branch. The herbarium for fungi and a new Division of Microbiology were established in the Department of Botany. In 1977,the Division was moved to Tsukuba Botanical Garden newly established in Tsukuba, north-east from Tokyo. The herbarium has expanded and at present about 210,000 fungal specimens are kept. At the new laboratories and herbarium in Tsukuba, we have just started loan services of specimens, preparing databases of fungal specimens, and educational activities. Mycological contributions by the successive curators, R. Imazeki (1931-1946), Y. Kobayasi (1946-1972), Y. Otani (1972-1983), and a few contributions by Y. Doi (1965-present) in TNS, are summerized in this paper. The important collections of fungal specimens, donated personal libraries from the deceased Japanese mycologists are mentioned. Lectures and practical training programs for taxonomy of fungi held in TNS and the present fungal displays are also explained in this paper.
