Stylactaria carcinicola (Hiro) is redescribed based on specimens collected from Suruga Bay, Japan. As observed by Hiro (1939) and H. M. the Showa Emperor Hirohito (1988), three types of zooids (gastrozooids, gonozooids, and tentaculozooids) were also found in the specimens from Suruga Bay. The gonophore is a short lived medusae with four perradial and four shorter interradial tentacles. Nematocyst composition, the morphology of gametes and planulae, and planula behavior were examined in laboratory maintained colonies. The differences between S. carcinicola and its close relative Stylactaria hooperii (Sigerfoos) are discussed.
