There is growing need for us Japanese teachers at college of technology to develop student's abilities to write and speak Japanese. One method improve student's writing ability is teach them how to write essays. But it seems difficult for a teacher to teach all the students in a class how to write essays, for, generally speaking, it is under the one-to-one guidance of a teacher and with high motivation on the part of students show gradual progress in writing essays. However we can improve student's motivation to study writing essays, if we set an essay examination. After giving lessons in essay writing, I found that it is possibl to improve student's ability of writing Japanese. The method taken in my practices was that the teacher gets the students to learn examples by rote and provides them with opportunities to criticize each other through debate games. Especially, giving a presentation at debate games could obtain good results in improving student's abilites of writing and speaking Japanese. In conclusion we could improve student's abilities of writing essays regardless of the class-size.
