The energy-saving standards of next generation was announced'in 1991 in order to conserve the energy which was consumed in houses. In this paper, the various energy-saving indices of the next generation, the thermal environment and the energy consumption were investigated in six detached houses. Main findings were as follows : 1) Two houses which were built after 1999 met the energy-saving standards. 2) The average temperatures in the living rooms of all houses were around 28℃ in the evening in summer. But those in winter varied with the houses and they were 19.6〜24.3℃. 3) The difference of the temperature between at the ceiling and at the floor in both seasons was within 2℃ in only the house which was mechanically ventilated. 4) The temperatures in the bathrooms of all houses except the mechanically-ventilated house were too low in winter. Little attention was paid to the temperzature in the bathrooms. 5) Energy consumptions in winter were larger than those in summer in all houses. The energy consumptions in summer were smaller than those which had been expected. 6) Energy consumptions per floor area were below the energy-saving standard except a traditional wooden house.
