In this paper, a new method of design on the letter space is described for the pattern recognition of the alphabetic character. First, the alphabetic character of a Gothic body is made thinning then the character pattern is generated. On the other hand, a vector with the original point, where is the center of the image, and half the size of on one of the image is assumed. The vector rotates and scans on the image, and the pixel which intersects with the vector in the each rotation angle is extracted. The sum total is taken for the distance from the starting point of all extracted pixels, then the sum total is interrupted by the maximum value. As a result, the index in one character pattern is obtained. Next, the character pattern, which changes the size by reducing or expanding the same character, is made. A similar operation is done to each character pattern, and the index is requested. The index of N=3 piece of thus one character is obtained. The index of this N piece is assumed to be an element which shows the feature of the character, and one character is projected to N dimension space. A similar index is calculated about all characters of the alphabet. As a result, the letter space of the alphabet can be composed.
