The properties of GABA response in the cell bodies of frog primary afferent neurons were studied by the internal perfusion technique. To study only the Cl^- channels, the external perfusion solution was made completely deficient in Na^+, K^+ and Ca^<2+> and the internal solution contained only Cs^+, Cl^- and aspartate-. The reversal potential for GABA response was equal to that for Cl^- and behaved as a simple Cl^- electrode following changes of external and internal Cl^- concentrations. The GABA responses were blocked competitively by bicuculline but non-competitively by picrotoxin.
