The present study examined the effects of gender role on work motive in adolescents. Vocational-Indecision Scale (Moroi, 2002), Vocational-Motivation Scale (Adachi, 1998), Gender-Role Attitude Scale (developed by the author, revising scale items used by Wakabayashi et al. <1981> and Suzuki <1987>), and Bern Sex-Role Inventory (Bern, 1974) were administered to adolescents (N=426). A series of the factor analyses (principal axis factoring with promax rotations) were executed in each sample of males and females. Based on those analyses, subscales were constructed. The multiple regression analyses indicated that vocational-indecision and vocational-motivation were uniquely determined by gender role attitude and trait. That is, the egalitarian attitude inhibited vocational indecision. As predicted, masculinity was a powerful predictor of task achievement motive, while femininity significantly influenced the motivation to interact with people. However, some inconsistent results were found. Various functions of gender role in promoting work motive were discussed.
