It is now clear that inadequate energy supplies are the immediate cause of the collapse of agriculture in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea). Economic mismanagement and the inability to trade on the world market for energy supplies has hindered the operation of mines and factories, and has created difficulties in keeping agricultural and transportation machinery running. This has resulted in the loss of soil fertility, the inability to maintain the productivity of the modern agricultural system, and therefore the inability of the DPRK to continue to provide sufficient food for its population through domestic production. This paper shows how shortages of commercial energy supplies have a direct influence on the productivity of modern agricultural systems.
