The general public is largely unaware of the scale of use of commercial energy supplies in agriculture and in the processing, distribution, and preparation of food. This paper shows how roughly 20% of the energy budgets of industrialized countries are needed to provide food for their populations. The study focuses on Japan, and shows how an energy shortage could conceivably lead to a food crisis, such as that in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
