Although Japan has been enforced one of the most stringent vehicle emission regulations in the world, further reduction in vehicle emission is required to achieve a better air quality and environment. So, the development of advanced measures with both the automotive and fuel technologies is required to meet such demands. Therefore, Japan Petroleum Energy Center (JPEC) has launched a program called Japan Clean Air Program (JCAP) in collaboration with automobile and petroleum industries in Japan, which being a five year project, has commenced since FY 1997 and terminated in FY 2001. Target of JCAP I was a search for the best solution of air quality improvement in Japan with the most advanced vehicle emission control technology and fuel technology.
