In MIRACLE system, which is our first prototype of virtual cloth-fitting system, we can use only plane texture mapping on feature points. In this method, we judge only feature points on a given area of clothes. So, we can detect only one flat area of clothes and cannot detect more than two areas or non-flat areas such as curved surfaces. Under this situation, we are trying to develop a new recognition method for cylindrical objects like sleeves on T-shirt. In general, when we see some 3D object, we can see at most half side of a cylinder and other side cannot be seen. So we placed four feature points on quarter side of cylinder to know which side it faces, and other points near them to detect the direction and size of the side. In our method, computer can distinguish sleeves by separating four planes from cylindrical objects. According to visible side of cylinder and its direction, texture images are mapped on each plane. Also, interpolation of invisible points is executed by using positions of other detected points, in case some of feature points cannot be seen. Our proposed method will be applied to all clothes that have sleeves. If we combined cylinders with planes, many kinds of objects including clothes can be detected and mapped by optional images.
