The partially delayed Fizeau interferometer (PDFI) for applications to optical coherence tomography is discussed. The PDFI is a compact low-coherence interferometer consisting of a beam splitter, a phase delay element (PDE) with a high refractive index, and an objective lens. The PDE makes optical paths of reference and signal lights from the sample equal, and also functions as a phase modulator to the reference light for the optical heterodyne detection of a signal light. The axial and lateral resolutions are about 20 μm and 7 μm, respectively. The dynamic range is 70dB and the length between the PDE and the objective is 17 mm. The en face optical coherence tomography (OCT) image of an onion at a depth of 100 μm is also obtained.
