The transmittance for a two-dimensional photonic-crystal structure consisting of 8 × 8 cylinders filled with or surrounded by a liquid crystal was numerically calculated using the scattering matrix method. When the refractive index of the liquid crystal was increased from 1.4 to 1.6, the transmittance for the liquid-crystal-filled cylinders increased from 4.5 × 10^<-3> to 1 at a wavelength of 825 nm, and that for the cylinders surrounded by the liquid crystal increased from 1.3 × 10^<-3> to 1 at 1060 nm (triangular lattice) and from 3.0 × 10^<-4> to 1 at 1140 nm (square lattice).
