The authors have developed miniature mechanical seal for rotary blood pumps and have investigated the sealing characteristics of it for many years. It is purposed, in this study, to make the influence of the surface roughness on the characteristic of the sealing clear, using three seat rings designed the varied surface roughness, from the characteristics of torque and leakage. In consequence, the infinitesimal surface roughness has influences on the characteristics of shaft seal. Although, the most suitable value of the surface roughness for torque and leakage obtained by this study was different, it is known that frictional torque and leakage can be decreased by the optimum design.
