This paper illustrates how the inverse problem approach to scheduling may be applied to implement a personnel scheduling system. The problem derives from a real-world production scheduling for a precision machine factory, with a realistic problem specification but with a large reduction in size. The purpose of the scheduling is to meet various soft targets, such as equalizing workload for all workers or keeping the key dates such as beginning and ending times of jobs. The approach may be interpreted a poor man's Lagrangean relaxation in which all multipliers are predetermined constants.
