This paper is a description of a syllabus for first year college students training to become nursery and kindergarten teachers, the background institutional, societal and pedagogical concerns which led to the development of a specialised syllabus for this group of students, and the results of using this syllabus in first year college classes. In consideration of the curriculum guidelines supplied by the school and the students' interests and needs, a syllabus was designed to foster fluency and motivation in the first semester, and focusing on techniques and methods appropriate to teaching English to very young learners as well as practical issues such as writing outcomes-based lesson plans in English, team-teaching, and self and peer review, in the second semester. Over the years, students have taught lessons on such themes as : art and crafts, songs and dance, puppet plays, numbers, colours, animals, holidays, games, and parts of the body. Groups often translate Japanese children's songs into English in order to incorporate them into a lesson. Some groups use "Kamishibai" techniques to tell simple stories which they have written themselves. As peer teachers, trainees need to be able to explain directions to their students in English during the lesson Evaluation is a combination several factors : teacher, peer and self evaluation of the teaching sessions; participation in the peer-taught sessions as a student; and a file check to ensure that all materials and lesson plans are filed along with evaluations of each lesson. This case study will explain the background and processes of designing a syllabus such as this, explore the practicalities of teaching it, and the results for both students and teacher.
