Although we can count various factors why women are underrepresented among elected officials at all levels of government, this article highlights the influences of political parties (party nomination) on female candidates. Using the data of the 2003 prefectural legislative elections, we compare several measurements of each political party and 'independent' group; number of female candidates, number of female winning candidates, proportion of female candidates, proportion of female winning candidates, successful ratio of female candidates, successful ratio of male candidates, ratio of incumbents and newcomers, and the competition ratio. The results show that there are large differences among political parties. While the influences of political parties are various, political parties seem not to work positively to solve women's underre-presentation.
