In Vespa simillima colonies if the mother queen is lost, the colony can continue to develop, providing there are enough workers present in the colony at the time of queen loss. Some workers were found to develop ovaries and lay (haploid) eggs which develop into males, only when the mother queen is not present. Such queenless nests are characterized by, the presence of high numbers of eggs and larvae ; repeated use of cells in older combs ; decrease in cell size and an increase in the number of cells containing supernumerary immatures.
