A comparative study of dental arch and horizontal section of mandible in jomon and modern japanese using CT scanning

The purpose of this study was to compare dental arch and horizontal section of mandible between Jomon and modern Japanese using CT scanning. The data for this study were obtained from 40 modern male Japanese skulls and 39 Jomon male skulls kept in the Department of Anthropology and Prehistory at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo. For each specimen, a CT scan of the horizontal section of the mandible was made available. The guideline for the horizontal section was defined as passing through the pogonion parallel to the mandibular plane. The posterior dental arch breadth of the Jomon specimens was larger than that of modern Japanese. In the Jomon mandibular horizontal section, the masseter insertion length (the distance between posterior border of ramus and mandibular oblique line) and the breadth (the distance between the left and right posterior border of the ramus) were larger than those of modern Japanese. However, there was no significant difference found in the inner and outer mandibular breadth measurement (mandibular body breadth at the oblique line) between the two periods. It has been suggested that the size of the Jomon mandibular body (corpus mandibulae) was almost the same as modern Japanese, and that the large jaw size is a result of the large ramus size.
