To improve the bond strength of photo-cured composite resin to etched dentin, an experimental dentin primer containing 6.9 mol% N-methylolmethacrylamide (MENA), which has amide and hydroxy groups, was prepared. Phosphoric acid (PA : 0.5-40%), citric acid (CA : 1-40%) and 0.5 M aqueous solutions were used as etchants. When treatment was performed with and without experimental dentin primer and 6.9 mol% HEMA-dentin primer, the bond strength of the composite resin to etched dentin was measured after immersion in 37℃ water for 24. and 90 days and after thermalcycling was measured. Also, the amount of Ca decalcified was measured and the etched dentin surfaces, splits in dentin, resin-dentin interface and the dentin surfaces after the shear bond test were examined by SEM to investigate the bonding effect of and experimental dentin primer on etched dentin. The results were as follows : 1) The amount of Ca decalcified was 105.4 μg/cm^2 for 1% PA, 106.5 μg/cm^2 for 1% MA, 131.9 μg/cm^2 for 5% LA, 127.4 μg/cm^2 for 5% CA and 80.4 μg/cm^2 for 0.5M. 2) When treatment was performed with the experimental dentin primer, the bond strength of the composite resin to etched dentin with 1% PA, 1% MA, 5% LA, 5% CA and 0.5M after immersion in water for 24h. and 90 days and after thermalcycling was significantly higher than that when treatment was perfomed with HEMA-dentin primer and without any dentin primer. For the specimens treated without any dentin primer, the bond strength decreased over time in water and was reduced by thermalcycling, while the bond strength was unchanged for specimens treated with either dentin primer. 3) When pretreatment was perfomed with 1% PA, 1% MA, 5% CA and 0.5M, the collagen fiber exposed and acidwidened dentin tubules were visible on the dentin surfaces without any smear layer. Pretreatment with any of the etchants resulted in the development of a porous layer thickness less than 1 μm thick. 4) The acid-proof dentin layers of approximately 1 μm were visible at the resin-dentin interface, regardless of type of dentin primer and etchant. 5) Specimens treated without any dentin primer showed faillures occurring in the resin-dentin interface, while specimens treated with dentin primer showed resin and dentin cohesion fractures.
