Experimental primers to be applied to polycarbonate resin(PCR)brackets were tested in order to improve the bonding of orthodontic direct composite resin materials (CRB) {Transbond XT (TB), Light-Bond (LB), Sancure (SC) and Kurasper F (KF)} to brackets. The mixtures of solvents (dichloromethane, acetone, or MMA) with 10%, 30%, 50% and 90% ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and triethyleneglycol dimethacryalte (TEGDMA) were used as primers. The bond strengths of polished and primer-treated PCR rods to polished and primer-treated PCR plates and etched bovine enamel, as well as the bond strengths of primer-treated commercial brackets to human etched enamel types were measured. The polished and primer-treated PCR rods and bracket surfaces, as well as the fractured rods and bracket surfaces after the bond test were observed by using SEM. The results were as follows ; 1. For treatment with primers containing dimerhacrylates, the bond strengths of the PCR rods with CRB to PCR plates were significantly higher than those without treatment. 2. The treatment with primers attributed to the good bonding of CRB to PCR, as the bond strengths of the PCR rods with CRB to etched bovine enamel were significantly higher than those without treatment. 3. In looking at the treatments with MMA containing 10%, 30% or 50% EDGMA, the bond strengths of brackets with CRB to etched human enamel after 24 hour water immersion were significantly higher than those without treatment. 4. The SEM micrograph revealed that specimens exhibiting a high bond strength had CRB-cohesive fractures and CRB-bracket interface failures after bond testing
