The purpose of this study was to compare an ideal dentist to 6th year students of a dental college and to clarify whether dental students became more ideal each year. We investigated the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th year students of Fukuoka Dental College using a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 9 sentences describing appropriate attitudes and 9 sentences describing inappropriate attitudes to 9 essential items of an ideal dentist and asked the students to agree or disagree with each sentence. The results were as follows : 64% of the 6th year students agreed with the sentence "As dentists are specialists, patients must obey them." and 61% agreed with the sentence "A dentist usually controls dental laboratory technicians, dental hygienists and the other staff." Since these 2 sentences described inappropriate attitudes, agreement was undesirable. The ratios of desirable responses from the 18 sentences of the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th year students were 63%, 60%, 62% and 53%, respectively. These results suggested that the 6th year students of the dental college were lacking 2 essential items of an ideal dentist as follows : "A dentist treats patients kindly." and "A dentist cooperates with co-dental staff." It was also found that dental students did not improve according to advances in the year of study.
