PURPOSE ; Bone & Tissue Expanding (BTE) implant with a mechanism of adjusting lengths for the fixture part, was developed by T. Shimoda in 1994,to provide osteogenesis where vertical bone height was insufficient. The aim of this study, for new structural dental implant that was investigated several effects from the principles of Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) and Distraction Osteogenesis (DO). MATERIALS AND METHODS ; As an experimental animal, 17 male, adult inbred beagle dogs with a minimum weight of 9 kg were used. Prior to the study, during a healing period of six months, all 2nd to 4th premolars and 1st to 2nd molars were extracted under general anesthesia. The submandibular skin was incised horizontally, and full-thickness pedicle flap including periosteum was elevated by blunt dissection in order to partial resection of the alveolar ridge (35mm×15mm). BTE implant was inserted from inferior mandibular body with a osteosynthesis plate. After two weeks from implantation, inner screw was advanced 4times (a period of 10 days), total length of 7mm, toward the oral cavity to elevate the periosteum and mucous membrane of mandible. Experimental animals were observed 7groups in the 4th to 44th weeks after the lifting up the periosteum with an inner screw. RESULTS ; When using the implant with an adjustable into their effective length, several effects to the site can be considered due to its different fixture shape. Local histological changes were greatly influenced by the elevation height of the mucous and the method of elevation. These observations indicated that an experimental acquisition of a new generated osseous formation could establish in dogs, and that complate osseous healing and creation of tissue to the resectional mandible was fevoured by the placement of implantation according to the principles of GBR and DO theories. CONCLUSION ; The BTE implant was seem to have many expectations and possibilities toward their clinical applications.
