• The purpose of this histopathological study was to investigate the effects of occlusal trauma on periodontal tissue and the nerve fibers in the periodontium in the diabetic rat induced by streptozotocin. The following results were obtained. 1) Both diabetic and control groups showed the constriction of the periodontal ligament at the top of bifurcation and hyalinization of periodontium 1 day after experiment of occlusal trauma. 2) The perforative resorption from the surroundings of alveolar bone with hyaline changes was found 3 and 5 days after experiment in the control groups, whereas the diabetic group showed few osteoclasts, very scanty bone resorption. It was indicated that diabetes mellitus already exerted a great influence on periodontal tissue at the early stage. 3) The compressive and traction sides were found 2 weeks after experiment in the control groups, indicating adaptive response of periodontal tissue to intense occlusal force, whereas diabetic group showed markedly late resorption of alveolar bone 3 weeks after experiment, occurrence of intense traumatic changes of periodontium, in addition to attrition and tooth fracture, indicating intense occlusal force subjected. 4) Both control and diabetic groups showed partial swelling and decrease in intensity of staining in the nerve fibers within periodontium from 1 day after experiment. 5) After 5 days of experiment, the decrease and degenerative change of nerve fibers were greater in degree in the diabetic groups than in control groups. 6) In both control and diabetic groups, the intense changes of nerve fibers, such as partial swelling, decreasing of staining and disappearance were greatly due to the compression to periodontium. From these results, it was indicated that occulusal trauma in a diabetic rat induced the severe destruction of periodontal tissue for long periods, facilitating the development of periodontal disease and further promoting the progress with high possibility.
