The Rosencwaig-Gersho theory of the photoacoustic effect is extended to the case of double-layer solids. The general expression for the complex amplitude of the periodic temperature at the solid-gas boundary is obtained. Simplified expressions for several special cases are derived. The observed relation between the phase of the photoacoustic signal and the thickness of the surface layer represents features of the theoretically-derived formulae for specific conditions.
