Measurements of Dielectric Constants in Lead Monoxide Single Crystals

Measurements of the dielectric constant of tetragonal-phase and orthorhombic-phase lead monoxide single crystals are reported, with reference to the electric capacitance of the surface oxide layer of metallic lead; and all the numerical results are given for the principal values of the permittivity tensor for both crystals. The observation was carried out by measuring the electric capacitance of the crystals at frequencies from 100 Hz to 1 MHz and by the perturbation method for microwave-resonance frequency at 9 GHz, in the temperature range from 4.2 K to room temperature. The accuracy of the measurements was within 5 percent, and considerable anisotropy in the experimental results was found for both crystals.
