At present, there exist two distinct linear approximations concerning with e-p relations for soft soils, one is the linear approximation on log e-log p diagram, and the other is that on log f-log p diagram. However, little definitive data has been reported to show which of the two approximations in more suitable for the majority of soft soils. In this note, it will be shown that for soft soils the linearity of log f-log p curves in better than that of log e-log p curves. It is also shown that the log f-log p curves of soft soils are essentially composed of two segments of straight line, and the stress at which the two straight line segments of log f-log p curves intersect agrees well with the consolidation yield stress which was obtained from the graphical method proposed by Casagrande.
