Production rates of positive ions due to the photoionization of residual gases caused by synchrotron radiation in electron storage rings were estimated numerically. It was found that the production rates of H^+_2 and CO^+ are about one half that due to the collisions of circulating electrons. The rates are fairly high in the straight section where a multipole wiggler or an undulator is installed.
