Coupling between two gain-induced guides which were formed by injecting current through Zn difused stripe regions into AlGaAs-GaAs DH structure wafers, was considered. Lasers constructed with optically coupled two gain-induced guides, the lengths of which were shorter than the cavity length of the laser, were prepared. The coupling efficiency was estimated from the threshold currents of these lasers. When the waveguide width was 7 μm, the coupling length was 200 μm and the spacing between waveguides was 8 μm, the coupling efficiency was estimated about 30%. As an example of the application of this type of coupler, coupling between a DH laser and the gain-induced guide was demonstrated, and 25% of the laser power was obtained from the gain-induced guide.
