We present a new 2×2 propagation matrix for calculating the electro-optics of a liquid crystal display as a function of applied voltage and viewing angle. The 2×2 matrix method is obtained with the use of a new 2×2 propagation matrix for obliquely propagating light in a layered-inhomogeneous anisotropic medium. We show that the transmissions in a 90° twisted nematic cell at various applied voltages and viewing angles that are computed by the 2×2 matrix method are in good agreement with the experimental results and with those computed by the 4 ×4 propagation matrix and by the generalized geometrical optics approximation.
