Ray-Tracing in Gradient Index Tapered Planar Waveguides with Hyperbolic Secant Refractive-Index Profiles : On-Axis and Off-Axis Coupler Devices

An analysis of light propagation through tapered hyperbolic secant planar waveguides is made from geometrical optics. Ray-tracing equations are obtained and angle and position transformations and numerical aperture conversion are calculared in order to design typical devices for integrated optics. The results are applie to a special type of taper function called convergent parabolic profile.
